Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are an innovative way to maximize living space while accommodating evolving family needs. For our client, a thoughtfully designed two-story custom ADU in Berkeley became the perfect solution for supporting both the client's family and the client's parents under one roof. This custom floor plan balances privacy, functionality, and future investment potential—all within a tight urban lot.

A HOME FOR TWO GENERATIONS

Evren designed this ADU with multi-generational living in mind. The first floor is dedicated to the client's parents, ensuring accessibility and convenience, while the second floor is home to the client's family. The layout allows both households to coexist comfortably, with designated private spaces and shared areas for gathering. Looking ahead, this ADU also holds potential as a rental unit, providing an additional source of income in the future.

MAXIMIZING SPACE ON A TIGHT LOT

Building on a small lot in Berkeley required creative planning. To make room for the ADU, the existing garage was demolished, but its original footprint was incorporated into the new design to optimize space. Additionally, an extended portion of the main house will be removed to allow for better use of the property. The ADU itself is recessed from the street, leaving space at the front that the clients can eventually transform into a parking area or a landscaped yard.

I wanted a space where my family could stay for extended periods, creating their own little nest—a place that feels like home. At the same time, I envisioned an inviting space for entertaining, where my son could grow into and spend time with his friends. I call it my bungalow, inspired by a relaxed beach coastal theme—light, airy, and perfect for making memories.

SMART STORAGE SOLUTIONS

With limited square footage, efficient storage solutions were a key design priority. To accommodate the family's active lifestyle, exterior bike storage was incorporated into the ADU’s design. Inside, under-stair storage was added to maximize functionality. Recognizing the need for dedicated workspaces, a closet was repurposed into an office nook with a glass window overlooking the stairwell and street—providing a bright, compact workspace for remote work.

AN ELEVATED SPACE FOR ENTERTAINMENT

A standout feature of this ADU is its roof deck, thoughtfully designed as an outdoor entertainment space. Offering stunning views of the Bay, this elevated area provides the perfect setting for relaxing and hosting guests. To enhance convenience, the second-floor bathrooms are strategically located near the back of the ADU, ensuring easy access for visitors while maintaining privacy for the household.

A CUSTOM FLOOR PLAN DESIGNED FOR THE FUTURE

This two-story ADU is a testament to the flexibility and functionality that custom design can bring to urban living. By balancing multi-generational needs, storage efficiency, and entertainment spaces, Evren’s ADU is more than just an additional unit—it’s a well-planned, future-proof home.
